Biography and Statement

I was born in 1951 in Santa Monica, California, and grew up east of Los Angeles. After graduating from junior college I left the area and did some traveling. I eventually landed in Arcata, California and finished my education at Humboldt State University. My wife, Michele, and I moved to Corvallis, Oregon in 1979 where we settled down and raised two daughters. Since coming to this area I have continued to create and exhibit my artwork. I have worked at times as an illustrator, an art teacher (both at Linn-Benton Community College and at Oregon State University), and many other jobs to support this compulsion to draw.

My artwork is a kind of spontaneous expression of some sort of inner tale that wants to be told. I don’t plan what the imagery is going to be, but let it evolve as I work on a piece. Eventually a theme or story begins to take shape and I go with it. I am not telling specific stories so much as presenting a state of mind. My goal is to create imagery that will be intriguing to the viewer in its complexity, humor, and technical excellence. The titles are an integral part of my work and generally pop into my head at some point as I work on a piece; once the direction the imagery seems to be taking becomes apparent to me. As a whole, I hope the viewers will be able to relate to the imagery on some level, drawing from their own life experiences.

I primarily create graphite drawings on paper. I work either with pencils alone or in combination with watercolor and or India ink. The bulk of my paintings are done in watercolor.
